the friday five.

like the rest of the nation, here in notheast ohio we are experiencing a relatively mild winter.  this is freaking me out.  it is supposed to be cold and snowy in january.  but it isn’t.  so if the threat of catastrophic climate change is lurking in the back of your mind like mine, you will appreciate this list…

  1. rume bags – these are the coolost re-usable shopping bags ev-ah.  i love how they come in funky colors and in varying sizes, but the best part is how they fold up into neat little bundles when not in use.  i cannot tell you the number of times sales clerks have commented on mine.  get ‘cho sef sum!!
  2. johnny’s seeds – our garden seeds arrived yesterday!!  woo hoo.  i think we can start planting next week.  seriously.  didn’t you hear?  ohio has become a…
  3. zone 6a planting zone!! – ACK!!  this means we can plant earlier and our growing season lasts longer.  i have been a zone 5 planter all my life!!  my world is a mess now.  what’s next?  crapemyrtle in the backyard??
  4. yankee candles- once we’ve depleted all the earth’s natural resources we will need to burn candles for our light source.  i recommend the bartlett pear scent.  (i got mine at kohl’s)  very crisp and light.  in no way headache inducing.
  5. zola jesus – this chic grew up in wisconsin where her dad hunted for their food.  could be a good skill set to have.  anyway, i love her voice.  maybe it was all that venison. and don’t try to figure this out.  just go with it…

i hope you have a great weekend.  i’ll see you back monday after i have taken my summer clothes out of storage…

everyday food find.

i’ve made these tasty fish cakes before.  well lots of befores.  there are that good.  and easy.  and good.  and even better good when cod is on sale at your local market like it is this week for all you local acme shoppers.

i do change a couple of things.  i use closer to 2 pounds of cod yet still use only one egg to bind.  up the remaining ingredients a bit until you have a mixture that is slightly moist and holds together easily.  i usually cook the cod in the microwave the day before i plan to make them.  putting them together the next day takes only minutes, and dinner is on the table faster than you can say pass the tarter sauce!

sydney radiates a warm california vibe that easily chases away the winter blues…

channeling my inner penny de los santos.

if you are unfamiliar with ms. de los santos’ work, she is an amazing food/travel photojournalist who has worked for the likes of national geographic and saveur magazines.  she also has an prolific body of work featuring street photography using her iphone to capture and instagram to share.  i am continually awe-stuck and inspired by her work.  so inspired in fact, that i gave it a whirl at the laundromat…

it beats watching the washers go round.

yellow cake with chocolate mocha frosting.

friday afternoon brought cause for great celebration.  my oven was repaired!  i felt whole again.  friday evening brought five inches of snow.  i felt the need to bake.  i gave the decision of what to bake to my ridiculously-good-looking husband who without missing a beat chose a yellow cake with chocolate frosting.  he has good taste.  this is a great yellow cake recipe which i encourage you to try.   however, in my opinion, it’s the frosting that makes the cake.  i turned to martha for help.  i used this recipe as a base for my frosting but tweaked it a bit.

in place of the valrhona cocoa powder, i used 3/4 cups droste cocoa powder and 1/4 of my secret weapon black cocoa powder.  over my rgl husband’s objections, i decide a mocha twist would be heavenly.

i reduced the vanilla to one teaspoon and added 2 teaspoons of espresso powder, dissolving it the milk.  delicious!!!

martha’s recipe made the pefect amount of frosting to cover a 9″ double layer cake.  the mocha objections disappeared after the first bite;))
